Acquisitions Programs
The Library of Congress (LOC) Burma/Myanmar Office is responsible for the collection of materials published in Burma and around the country in various formats such as in print and electronic formats. The office collects more than 100 serial titles and more than 600 monographs annually. LOC-Burma’s mission is to build up a representative collection of Burmese culture, history, and civilization as well as documenting their contributions in the fields of governance, democracy, human rights, politics, sociology, social welfare, planning and development, economics, history, education, science and other areas of interest.
The office maintains contacts with a various local and international, governmental and non-governmental organizations to discover and acquire materials that do not always appear in the commercial market. Acquisitions trips are performed to collect materials from outlying States and Regions in addition to regular visits to the local bookstores and any other sources of public information. The representative also checks on the websites of governmental and non-governmental organizations, international organizations, and aid agencies for their publications. The office also obtains publications through exchange programs with a few institutions in the country. The material is also sent on a variety of subjects under a special cooperative program known as Southeast Asia Cooperative Acquisition Program (CAPSEA) to US and international research centers interested in Burma studies. The LOC Burma office not only acquires publications in the Burmese language but also acquires materials in English and in other major ethnic languages of Burma.
The Burma Office also prepares the Initial Bibliographic Records for the monographs acquired in the country and co-operates with Bangkok Office in cataloging the Burmese publications. The Burma Office is located in the U.S. Embassy compound in Rangoon. The staff welcomes CAPSEA participant visitors.
